:w00t: Welcome Snowy, it's great that you've joined us at :iconraw-nature: :)
I hope you really enjoy being part of this group; you can submit three images per day but not to the 'Featured' folder. Please feel free to ask if there is anything you're not quite sure of :)

Your first lovely image has been successfully submitted and I hope we will be seeing lots more of your great work in the near future :)

I can see that you have been putting the 5D body to good use :)

Hey! Remember me? I always see you in POTN xD though I forgot what was your deviant art account until now!

I wanted to ask you a question, a simple one, what is your macro setup, I want to see your whole deal for macro.

Because as you know i was having problems with getting the right setup...still having problems for a right macro setup for getting close.

Been thinking of trashing my 15 dollars extension tubes, and getting the kenko..maybe thats my problem.. I am getting very impatient with my shots, since most of them are out focus of spiders and red blobs of nothings, my 100mm is doing just fine alone, though I want more than 1:1...

Maybe the problem is with me, am too afraid to approach bugs, I always been afraid of them, but not the "little girl afraid" the over protective afraid.
Any help for me?

Hi Mony good to hear from you again. :D

I use the MP-E 65mm Macro lens and MT-24EX twinlite these days.
A little bit expensive unless you are as mad as a kipper!

Cheap extension tubes are usually a disaster and there should
be a law against them. A set of Kenkos will get you 2x and a
good close-up filter lens like the Canon 500D or Nikon 6T will
add another .4 and .3 respectively.

You will get sharp images using these however the most
important bit of kit is a flash unit. It needs to be mounted
on a bracket, as close to the subject as possible and have
some sort of diffusion. This thread has some examples and
may give you some ideas. The main thing is that you want
to get the light from the flash on the subject as quick
as possible as the flash is going to work as a virtual
shutter.

If you put the flash on the hotshoe not only will it cast
a shadow it will also take forever to reach your subject.
The motion blur this induces is often mistaken for an out
of focus shot. You need to hone your awareness of the
difference between missed focus and motion blur. You will
be very surprised at how many people just can't tell the
difference. Even when you show them the problem they can't
get their head round it. Don't be one of these people, it
will blight your progress in photography forever! Look at
every slightly blurred photo with a critical eye and ask
yourself "is motion blurred or blurred focus?"

The closer you get to insects, the more you get to know
them and respect them. They are pretty incredible and
apparently erratic behaviour usually has a pattern and
a very good purpose. With practice you start to predict
where they will go next or how much intrusion they will
tolerate.

Good luck, and do let me know how you are getting on and
if there is anything I can help you with.

One day my patience will break loose and I will get that lens...fiercely grab that 5 magnification...
But for now its sadly a no.. I'll have to save for that jewel, Do you think its worth to dump all these tubes and reverse filters and just get the mpe? I always get back on the thoughts of buying it..

Though I could use the money on other things because I dont only shoot macro.

And for the flash I already use one for other types of photography, am thinking of building the DIY diffusers and using it, I experienced the horror of a direct flash, god help us from these terrors.

So what I have to do is to practise a lot and get to know the insects.

Thank you very much snowy!

The MP-E is really just a very good lens reversed
and mounted on an adjustable extension tube.

A decent set of tubes with the electrical connections
so you can adjust the aperture, is what you need.
It is actually advantageous because the 100mm lens
gives you extra working distance.

Two sets of tubes and you have 3x magnification and
there is no reduction in the IQ of the lens at all.
I rarely use more than 3x for anything other than
ants and aphids.

Hello, I see that you use both 5D and 550D.. would you say the 5d has a distinct advantage in image quality over 550D? And what about ISO performance?

Thank you very much for your answer!

The 5D blows the 550D into the weeds! :omfg:

Noise wise they are sort of similar, they both
generate noise from around 800 ISO, at approximately
correct exposure. But the noise from the 5D is so
much more acceptable, it is reminiscent of film.
It doesn't nearly offend as much as the pixellated
digital version of noise from the 550.

Hope that helps.
